Flood Watch issued May 21 at 11:10AM AKDT until May 24 at 12:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK * WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam is possible. * WHERE...The Yukon River downstream of Mountain Village to the Yukon Delta Coast. * WHEN...Through Friday morning. * IMPACTS...Ice jams may result in flooding along the Yukon River over the Yukon Delta. Low lying areas near Emmonak, Alakanuk, Nunam Iqua and Kotlik have potential to flood from late tonight through Friday. If an ice jam forms, water could rise rapidly. Water is high at Mountain Village, but it appears that the threat of flooding at Mountain Village is over. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - The Yukon River broke up to past Mountain Village on Sunday May 19. The breakup front will likely reach Emmonak and Alakanuk between Tuesday night and Friday, based on historic trends. There is potential for flooding in Emmonak, Alakanuk, Nunam Iqua and Kotlik as breakup progresses. Though this year has mostly been a thermal breakup for most of the Yukon River, the ice in the Yukon Delta is thicker than normal and is more likely to jam up as water comes down river. An ice jam did form and release May 19 downstream of Pilot Station which led to flooding. This run of ice could lead to high water downstream. In addition, satellite imagery depicts minimal degradation of shorefast ice along the Yukon Delta Coast.
